The presidential election is near by and for that there are debates between the two candidates Joe Biden and President Trump. In recent events Trump tested positive for covid-19 and in response to this they were going to set up a vital debate for everyone's safety but President Trump refused to do so. These presidential debates have been a mess and have just seen the presidents going at one another and are seen as one of the worst debates in history and this cancelation also seems to be ironic due to Trump and his supporters stating that Biden was going to pull out of these debates but now Trump is. Trump acting like a child is refusing to take part in this important debate and says “that's not how debates work”. He seems to refuse to do anything that won't go his way. In response to this the second debate was pushed back to october 22. This is very immature from the president, he has been playing down the covid pandemic ever since it started and now since he tested positive and got the best treatment from americans tax dollars he is still downplaying and now refusing to take part in a virtual debate because it not what he wants, he is acting like a child. My question is do you think president trump should've been forced to take part in this virtual debate so things would stay on schedule.

I do think Trump should have taken part in the virtual debate. It is important everything that is planned, including the debate, should stay on schedule, especially since the presidential election is coming up in early November. As we all witnessed, the first presidential debate was a hot mess to say the least. In my opinion, neither of the candidates properly answered a majority of the questions, regardless of the reasons why. To add on, there are supposed to be three presidential debates. Because the second debate got pushed back, the last two will be very close to each other and close to election day. Lastly, despite the fact that Trump is almost fully recovered from Covid - 19, he should still be somewhat isolated, just in case there is a possibility he still has it, but is showing no more symptoms. Yes, this is a very far stretch, but it is better to play is safe, especially since both Trump and Biden are in their mid to late 70's.
ReplyDeleteI do think Trump should've agreed to the virtual debate, as he is doing a disservice to voters, Biden, and countless others. However, I don't think he can be forced to participate, as his answers may differ from if he had agreed to take part. He also mentions in the article that a virtual debate isn't "real" enough for him. This seems ironic because it's either a virtual debate or no debate. He also brings up a concern he has, that he would be cut off, but those are the rules of the debate, and he broke them multiple times last debate cutting Biden short of his time. He also mentions that a virtual debate is not what "debating is all about," which is very stubborn of him considering that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and we are in a pandemic, that he is single-minded and refuses to differ from an in person debate.
ReplyDeleteI think that President Trump should've agreed to the virtual debate. Like what Kailey Wei said I believe its a disservice to those who voted, but also I fell like its a bad thing for him to do in general. The reason why because many believe he will lose this years election so could this possibly mean hes afraid of losing the election and using this time to plan his further speeches? Yes I know this is a stretch but is it possible? Also yes because it is very unsafe during this time for a direct election if he was recently diagnosed with Covid-19.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that Trump should have taken part in the debate. Not only as the duty of the President and leader of a Nation, the Democratic Debates are a vital part of our democracy. In essence, Trump refusing to attend a virtual Debate as the leader is not only un-Democratic, it also ruins the reputation of our country as a whole. The President that WE as the general American population vote for and elect is supposed to be the shining leader and exemplar of our Country.

ReplyDelete(I did the one above lol, I just forgot to sign in before I posted it).
As a matter of principle, Trump should have agreed to the debate if only because it shows a certain respect to the way things are done and have been for many years. However, at the same time I somewhat understand his inhibitions regarding a virtual debate because of how different and unusual it could have been. Besides, he is the President, and so he has some free reign to choose what he does and does not do, whether or not others agree with him. Like Kailey mentioned, no one can force him to participate; at the same time, though, he probably should have participated for his own good because he is running out of time and opportunities to recover lost polling ground. In a year already defined by things being off-schedule, the one thing we could rely on to proceed somewhat normally was the election--but now it looks like even that might not be the case.
ReplyDeleteI think Trump should've taken the debate without a doubt, not only because he needs to uphold his mantle as President, but also to demonstrate his diplomacy. I feel like his refusal to do so was very selfish and pretty dumb on his part because the only thing he's doing is throwing a wrench in the debate process. If anything it's hurting his campaign because it shows how he is stubborn and uncommitted to showing his supporters and those he wants to support him as to why he should be President. Overall, it was a bad decision that could hurt his own campaign and some voters decisions.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to think that Trump doing this hurts his numbers, but Trump knows his audience, and that they will support him either way. Trump more or less knows that a townhall type discussion is Biden's strong suit, and wants to avoid embarrassing himself in front of a National Stage. I think he knows what he is doing by splitting the audience and having no party gain any substantial ground over each other.
ReplyDeleteI think should take part in this debate. Although I believe he cannot be forced to do so. In the previous presidential debate Trump and Biden talked over each other many times, by debating online presidents can be muted which helps with that issue. I do not see why Trump has any reason to say virtual debates are a bad idea other than the fact that he can not talk over Biden when he calls him out to deny his statement. For his case, Trump has been losing voters and mistakes like these with cause him o lose the election as well. His target audience needs to hear what he has to say.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Trump taking part in the debate would have been the best outcome, but I don't believe they can force him to take part in the virtual debate. If he had taken part in the debate, it would leave the schedule intact. Trump continuing to downplay Covid will only make him be seen as a worse candidate. So in my opinion if he did take part of the debate at his own free will it would probably have pulled in more voters. If he was forced to take part in the debate it wouldn't have changed how he feels about Covid therefor not helping him gain votes.
ReplyDeleteActually, I think it was the right call for President Trump to not take part in the debate. The first debate was a disaster and a disgrace. No one got answers to any of the needed questions and both candidates just repeated what they have been saying for the past 3 months. Do we really want a second debate, a second moment of shame, a second chance for the world to laugh at us. I don't think that any of the essential questions would have been answered in this second debate, and everyone would leave it feeling even more frustrated. American politics haven't been this partisan and polar in a very long time, there are very few undecided voters this time, for the most part everyone knows who they want to vote for. To be clear, I think that debates are important, but one right now wouldn't do any good, what are we gonna learn from a clown and a guy who stumbles over his own words. Also many people have been going around asking "well can't we just mute their mics?" To those people I say no, that would be a terrible idea. If you give the moderators of a debate the power to do that, that power can never be taken away. In future hopefully civilized debates, do you think partisan host networks like MSNBC and FOX are going to use that power honorably? I think that proper effective and civilized debates need to happen, but we can't constrain the debaters this much because its no longer a debate. Just a back and forth Q&A where the news networks control the ability to mute a candidate at will.
