Throughout his presidential campaign, Joe Biden pledged to take COVID-19 seriously. Just days into his presidential transition, he will take the first steps in keeping that promise. Unlike our previous president, Biden acknowledges the threat that the coronavirus presents against America. Biden will be announcing a 12-person coronavirus task force on Monday. This task force is meant to prove how seriously Biden plans to reduce the threat. With coronavirus hitting a record number of daily infections, Biden plans to focus on this urgent matter before it gets worse.
Biden is trying to bring back attention towards the virus, after being shadowed over by the elections. The president-elect is taking the same mindset that he and former President Barack Obama, had when they devoted themselves to the economy when they were elected 12 years ago, and bringing back that mindset towards COVID-19. Biden wants to fight for mandating masks across the country in all public areas. With finding a safe vaccine being expected by early December, but mass production sufficient for everyone coming several month into 2021, Biden does not want to allow the situation to worsen. Mandating mask wearing in all public areas across the country would certainly minimize infections, but in order to mandate people to wear masks, they must enforce it. With some people believing that masks are not necessary, it makes enforcing masks much more difficult. If people do not acknowledge the threat of the coronavirus, then enforcing masks will cause more of a problem. Personally, I believe masks are not an absolute solution to coronavirus, but they certainly mitigate the spread of it. Biden focusing on COVID-19 shows his priority on keeping the American people safe, which in my opinion should always be the number one goal for any president.

I do not think that Biden is taking COVID too seriously--it is one of America's greatest problems at the moment, and thousands of lives are being lost. Trump hasn't taken the virus seriously enough, which is why some see Biden's plans as too extreme in comparison, but the US should have had a more serious response from the beginning. I think that mask mandates are a viable solution because masks are proven to stop the spread of the virus and will solve more problems than they cause. There will be backlash, but that's a small price to pay for saving thousands of lives. Of course, it would be better if masks were mandated seven months ago, but America will simply have to adjust to more restrictions in order to fight this virus. Hopefully having a president who wears a mask and takes the virus seriously will convince more Americans to follow his example and do the same.
ReplyDeleteBiden is not at all taking the pandemic too seriously. This pandemic is the most critical issue facing the world today, as a global superpower the United States is obligated to set an example on how to prevent the disease - an example we have not lived up to. We owe this to the world, and we owe it to our citizens. Over two hundred thousand lives were lost due to this virus, and if we continue on our current trajectory many more are going to be lost as well. Biden trying to divert our path is the right thing to do. Mandating mask wearing by itself is not a viable solution to prevent coronavirus from spreading, because mask wearing alone is not enough. We need to enforce social distancing as well as stay at home orders to successfully beat this virus (pre-vaccine). Mandating masks are certainly a step in the right direction, and Americans want to beat the virus so this certainly should not cause more problems for America. This should help us in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI agree that COVID-19 is the most urgent problem currently and should be taken seriously. I also agree that masks are not enough, but I do think forcing masks will cause problems since there has been many public meeting with hundreds of people not wearing masks. I believe mandating these masks will cause problems, but overall increase the safety.
DeleteBiden is absolutely making the right move by first addressing COVID-19 over any other issue that our nation is facing. In fact, he urgency of his actions regarding the pandemic is reassuring to say the least. Each day, numbers are exponentially worsening and lives are being lost, even six months into quarantine. In my opinion, mandating masks is an effective first step to treating the pandemic, however many more need to be taken. By taking COVID-19 as seriously as it truly is, Biden is taking strides towards the right direction. With that being said, more plans and concrete action must be taken for America to overcome this pandemic as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Ella and Darshan that Biden is definitely not taking COVID-19/ the pandemic "too seriously." While there are many other issues and situations that Biden will soon have to address in his presidency such as boosting the economy, working on foreign relations, and others, addressing COVID and mitigating its spread and devastation is key to them all. Ensuring the safety of people is of the utmost importance, and Biden's apparent initiative to establish a Taskforce seems like a promising sign that he and his administration will try as best they can to ensure the safety of Americans and people around the world as well. I think that wearing masks is extremely important, since its purpose is to prevent people from spreading particles through coughing, sneezing, breathing, etc. The more people that wear masks means the less risk there is for airborne transmission, which is one way that the spread can definitely be mitigated. However, many people are against wearing masks which is problematic, so other methods of addressing the coronavirus need to be developed and implemented (one of which is a hopefully a fast approaching vaccine). Ultimately, an administration that will prioritize finding ways to fight the virus and limit its spread will move America in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteI agree with those that said Biden isn't taking the pandemic too seriously. Coronavirus does not care about your politics or beliefs, but it does care about if you are wearing a mask or not. If Donald Trump, the president of the United States, the most powerful man in the World, who probably had secret police eliminate anything that dared sneeze in his direction in a 300 ft. radius, can get Coronavirus, you bet you can get it as well. I strongly support a national mask mandate; I understand that some people may find wearing a mask uncomfortable, but wearing a mask not only protects yourself but it protects the people around you as well. If masks have the slightest chances of helping, why not take the chance? I think Biden is taking a step in the right path and I hope mandating masks doesn't create more problems as its purpose to help and improve, not worsen.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that masks will help lower the spread of COVID, and that mandating masks could cause problems. Although masks obviously help prevent COVID, some people just don't take COVID seriously and refuse to wear masks, so I do believe that mandating masks will cause problems.
DeleteAs with what has already been said previously, I don't think Biden is taking COVID precautions too lightly. With a global pandemic on such a large scale, I don't think you can ever be too precautious about contracting or spreading the illness. It's really hard, especially with how tumultuous and divided the current political climate is, so enforcing everyone to wear a mask is quite difficult. Personally, I think that even if people want to disregard it and not wear a mask, it's simply just consideration for the health of the rest of the world as well. Therefore, to actively enforce wearing a mask as law would be quite difficult, and I expect quite a bit of backlash from that decision on Biden's part. Finally, mandating everyone to wear a mask would definitely be essential, but I think for the time being it'd only cause more problems than it'd solve. The simple problem lies with COVID - we don't have to worry about a mask once COVID is gone, or there is an accessible vaccine. Whether it's enforced law to wear a mask or not, people will still refuse, so it simply cannot be a fool-proof guarantee. However, currently with the U.S skyrocketting in COVID cases, it certainly doesn't help to try, and Biden's definitely moving in the proper direction in handling COVID.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has already said what im gonna say but i do believe that Biden isn't taking the virus too seriously. Biden shouldn't one hundred percent focus on the virus but also be aware of other thinsg going on. Yes, the virus is a big part of the world as of right now and he should be invested in eliminating deaths and sicknesses in America, but other problems should not be ignored. Making wearing masks a rule will definetely help covid numbers from lowering, but not eliminate it completely. Everyone should still maintain distance and keep a tight bubble of friends and family if everything is to go back to normal. One person infected person could affect hundreds if they go in public so of course masks should be necessary but we shouldn't rely on it. Additionally, some poeple refuse to wear masks because they dont want to. It's a big problem for the United States and many people argue over it. It could cause problems
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I don't think that the president elect is putting too much focus on the virus. I think if masks had been mandatory and enforced early in the year, we wouldn't be where we are now. Many countries are in the process of recovering from the virus, although some are tightening restrictions again, but the U.S. has more and more cases every day. While masks are not going to completely solve the problem, I believe that requiring masks and enforcing them would be effective in preventing the spread of the virus. Like Amitai said, there are some people against wearing masks, which is concerning. Earlier in the year, I remember people gathered in D.C. to protest COVID restrictions, such as masks, so there could be some backlash if masks are made mandatory. However, masks aren’t very useful if people are constantly gathering in large groups, so I think some social distancing measures should also be put into place for a few weeks.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that mandating masks is a solution to controlling the spread of COVID. It may help, but there is still more that needs to be done. Data has shown that COVID cases spike during time when people often get together such as the Fourth of July. With Thanksgiving fast approaching it will be important to encourage people to stay with the same people rather than going to visit others.
